But, in these days of high fashion having a formal education in designing can take you a long way, especially when you are looking for job. Once you're done with your education, create a good portfolio. A portfolio says a lot about the designer's skills and his/her expertise in the field. It has to reflect the designer's artistic capacity and skill.
